A Children's DVD Storage Solution!

Over the past three years, we have accumulated A LOT of children's DVDs. I personally feel like my daughter needs to own every Disney movie possible because I love them so much. This means that by this time we have so many in our house that we can't find some and others are spewing out from cabinets. We also find them under and in toys in my daughter's playroom. And, now, she has developed this fascination with tearing the plastic cover off the front. This has been driving me insane!!! So, this mommy has found a solution...

The before

The process

I placed all of the DVDs in a large cardboard box.

My daughter thinks she has a new toy!

The Atlantic DVD sleeves that I purchased from Amazon.

Each package comes with two sleeves for each DVD... One for the actual
DVDs and another for the paper cover. Then, you place the DVD sleeve inside
the paper cover sleeve.

The storage bin I purchased from Hobby Lobby for 50% off. It was originally
$15.99, but I got it for $7.99. I have several of these in my home and I love
them. They are very sturdy and cute at the same time.

A side view.

The after

All of the DVDs are now tucked away nicely in this little bin. The DVDs
at the back are ones that we have borrowed from family.

I was a little shocked that they all fit. But, who knows, I may find some more over the next
few weeks underneath furniture.

A view from the top!

I am sure you are wondering what I did with all the DVD plastic boxes?!?! Well, I kept several in case we needed them. But, a majority of them will go to the recycle bin at school.

Now, I have to find a solution for the overwhelming amount of books my daughter has in her room. I have a few ideas, but haven't completely decided which route I will take.

Happy Organizing,

  1. We had the same problem with ours but needed them to be more travel friendly because we take them when we go to see family (10+hrs away). I bought a 90 cd holder that worked great. I have some that had blu rays too and we keep them in a box under the tv stand. My movies I keep in a disc gear, works great for maximizing storage.

  3. I am loving reading your blog! I'm a teacher and have organized my books a hundred different ways. I organized them by theme or character and labeled the basket with the picture and name to go with it. I have a princess bin with all princess themed books, a Disney bin, Franklin, Dr. Seuss, etc. I haven't needed to label each book yet but, in the past, I have also put a sticker on each book with the picture to match.

    1. Thank you so much for reading my blog. It means a lot ;) I can totally understand the issue with organizing books for class. I am a high school teacher, so I don't deal with that as much, but my sister teaches kindergarten and she can totally relate. I would love to see a picture of your organization.

      With lots of blog love,

  4. I totally understand. I chuckled when I heard you find then in the toy box. I do too...and in the dirty clothes, and under their pillow...

I'm trying to get mine organized tonight. We bought a huge cd case from Target last night.

    1. I have found that DVDs are like sippy cups at my house. I can look under the seat of my car and there sits a sippy cup. No telling how long it has been under there either. LOL!!! At the moment, we have a stack of DVD cases that are waiting for the DVDs to magically appear. ; )

  8. Love, love, love the name of your blog!!!!! I'm totally O.C.D. :-)

I've been wanting a less obtrusive way to store our DVDs and CDs, but I'm not sure I'm ready to take the plunge yet.

    1. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I originally had a blog with a different name and I decided I wanted something a little more clever. So, after a lot of thought, I had a light bulb moment with this one. LOL!!! It is a play on words because I am totally OCD too.

  10. I like this idea a lot. We have the same problem, but with Wii games. I am going to order some of these sleeves for the movies and Wii games. I think this will help. I am very much not OCD, but I need a little more organization in my life.

  11. How many DVDs does that one container fit? I love this idea, but between kiddo movies, grown-up movies, and video games, we have 100+ discs to organize!

What are the dimensions of the bin?

    1. I have three of these boxes... one for my daughter and two for the family. I have all of our family movies in one box, which is probably around 70 or 80 with plenty of extra room to spare. The other extra family box is for blank cases in case we may need one for a DVD. The box is 13 1/2" x 7 1/4" x 6 3/4, and here is the link from Hobby Lobby: http://shop.hobbylobby.com/store/item.aspx?ItemId=167770

Let me know if I can help you in any other way. : )

    1. You sure can... I am so glad that I have something on my blog that could help cancer patients. It is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. I lost my precious grandmother to ovarian cancer in 1992. So, I support all cancer societies.

      Thank you so much!

  13. This is a great idea. I have a 20 yr old daughter who has around 150 dvd's. How many dvd's are in does the storage bin hold?

    1. Thank you so much! Now, if I could just find a place that is away from my daughter. She likes to get them out and play with them. LOL!!! I think you could fit about 100 in there. That is strictly a guess, though. I need to sit down and count the DVDs in them. I know I fit all of my daughter's collection in one with plenty of room to spare and all of the family DVDs in one with tons of extra space. Hope that helps. ;)

If you decide to tackle your DVDs, I would start by getting one storage box.

      xoxo,
      Kristin

  14. I am looking for a way to organize my credit cards that I don't use often so that I don't have to carry such a large wallet in my purse. Do you have a post about that in your blog archives?

  15. I have used the same sytem you have...the Atlantic sleeves. They can get pretty expensive when you have so many. We currently have 8 shoes boxes full and still don't have them all in sleeves. The problem we run into is that each set is a cover sleeve for the artwork and a sleeve for 2 DVDs...however our family is really into the TV series DVD's and we have keep running out of the actual CD sleeves. When we have a movie, we buy the individual plastic sleeve and use the outer one from this set, but still we are stuck with about 200 outer sleeves! Does anyone want to trade outer sleeves for the inner ones? Atlantic doesn't sell just the inner sleeve that holds the 2 dvd's. We have invested so far in over 20 sets of these...that is about $400....

  16. This storage solution is good but for short time, because after a few month may be the cd or dvd will hampered. So i think the best solution is to save them in storage device. but as a temporary way this is too good
