I must say, organizing is something that comes natural to me. But, I understand that not everyone is in that same boat. I honestly feel that it isn't that people do not want an organized home, office, car, etc., I just think they don't know where to start. It is just like writing a paper... Once you get the introduction done, it is smooth sailing from there.
So, over the last couple of weeks, I have thought about the advice I would give to anyone who wants to take the organizing and decluttering plunge. And, I came up with 5 little tips for you...
When you first start organizing your space, start with a small project and then move on. You should never start out with a project that is too overwhelming. Honestly, that would be a disaster before you even started. Taking on small projects and finishing them will give you the motivation you need to tackle that big project too.
Some great examples of small projects would be:
Cleaning out your makeup drawer
Cleaning out your junk drawer in the kitchen
Throwing away all the trash in your car
Going through all of your toiletries
Going through one of your personal drawers
I will admit, this is my biggest problem!!! It seems like I can't stick to this rule, even though I try really hard. I guess it is because I will tackle one project, get to a stopping point (usually I have to wait on my husband to help with something), so I start another project. I do not like to have downtime and when I get my mind set on something, I have to go with it.
But, enough about me and my issues. Lets get back to the list... It is wise to tackle one project at a time. You don't want to be the individual that takes on ten projects and never finishes one of them. And, sometimes, if you do this, you have made a bigger mess, wasted money, and your valuable time.
This step goes along with step #2. Tackling everything at once usually means that you have attempted to work in more than one space. I would not recommend doing this! Like my blog title, I am a little OCD. : ) When I get something in my head, I think I need to do it right then. But, after all the excitement calms down in my head, I remind myself that I need to work and complete one room at a time. You honestly don't want your house to be a complete disaster because you are attempting three different rooms at once. And, this is especially true if you are required to work within a budget. My husband and I are both high school teachers, so we have to complete projects as the money allows.
If you are a little OCD, like me, just remember to stop, relax, and... BREATHE!!!
This is the step that a lot of people can not do! If you haven't used something in over 2 years, then more than likely you aren't going to use it... EVER!!! I know that some people get emotionally attached to their "stuff" and it gets really hard for them to physically let go. Have you ever watched the show Hoarders?!?! : )
When I say purge, I don't mean throw it away. We hardly ever throw anything away at my home. We either recycle it, sell it, or give it to Goodwill. One person's junk may be another person's treasure!
If you have a hard time letting go, just tell yourself the same thing I tell myself... Someone needs this more than I do! It helps everytime. ; )

Definitely remember this step! Organizing doesn't have to be detailed or overwhelming. You do not have to complete all of your tasks at once. You have freedom when it comes to organizing. If you try something and it doesn't work for you, then change it. Nothing is set in stone! Not all storage solutions are created equal. One approach may work perfect for one person's family, but be a complete disaster for yours.
If you have trouble keeping all of your thoughts together, then write it down. Believe me, I have a notebook, planner, and post-it notes that I keep with me at all times. If I don't write something down, I will forget it. I blame it on that "mommy brain" I keep telling y'all about. : )
I hope these 5 simple steps have given you a little light at the end of the organizing tunnel. If you ever have a question about organizing, please don't hesitate to comment below or email me at theocdlifestyle@gmail.com. I love to hear from you! : )

Happy Organizing,

I love your tips! I've self-diagnosed myself with mild hoarding tendencies-- I have a hard time purging. But, if I give a box of stuff to someone else to take to Goodwill I'm fine. I know, it's weird.
ReplyDeleteThank you! There are times that I can't part with things (clothes especially). Something may be really cute but I haven't worn it in awhile. So, I think I need to keep it. LOL!!! And, now, I am in such a DIY frame of mind that I am always thinking what I can do with random boxes, cans, etc.
ReplyDeleteMy mom doesn't understand my purging at all. She says I am not sentimental! I am a picture person. I love to take and keep photos. But, she thinks I should keep everything. I think it upsets her that my sister and I am not like that. :( But, my house isn't that big, so I don't have a lot of room to store things.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend! And, thank you for taking time to read my blog post. :)

These are great tips. You sound so much like me, I feel like I could have written this post myself. I am a bit "OCD"! But, my problem is, I am very good at organizing everyone else, but have such a hard time when it comes to my personal stuff. I tend to get sentimentally attached to "things" but I am really working on it! So glad I found your blog. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are some things that I get sentimental about (like my daughter's dresses), but most things I can part with. I do have a small issues with getting rid of clothes because I am always scared I will wear them again or be able to fit into them again. :) So glad you found my blog too. Thanks for much for reading my blog!!!
DeleteHave a wonderful weekend!
