The One Month Utensil Challenge Wrap-Up

Last month, I began a utensil challenge in my home. I was tired of trying to pry open my kitchen drawers to see this...

So, I decided to do something about it. I started a 1-month utensil challenge on February 18th. I began by placing all of the utensils in two bags. One bag was for the utensils I was getting rid of and the other was for the items that were waiting to be used.

As I used a utensil, it went back into one of these two drawers. On March 18th, the utensils that were still remaining in the bag would go to the Goodwill...

After this fun month, I will be getting rid of the following utensils...

I am still in ahhh at how many "extra" utensils I had lying in my drawers. I mean, how many spatulas does one family need? Insane! No wonder I couldn't shut the drawers.

Now, I have to take out all the utensils again, organize them, place in my new acrylic trays, and place the utensils back in the drawers...

I purchased these OXO soft works acrylic utensil trays from TJMaxx for
$9.99 each.

A closeup.

How the trays look in the drawers.

Drawer #2 - After... This drawer is still a work in progress. It looks a lot better
than it did, though. I need more trays for this drawer. So, I had to use another one I had
in the house. Definitely going to purchase more acrylic trays. That white
tray is an eye-sore.

Before & After

This is definitely a work-in-progress type of project. I got rid of a lot this round, but I plan on purging and reorganizing even more. I will keep you posted!

Happy Organizing,

  1. I definitely need to do this. I struggle to get our utensil drawer open every time.

    1. It was definitely an eye opener. No wonder I couldn't find anything in either drawer. I was embarrassed when I poured out the bag and I had 7 spoons to give away. Crazy!!! I had some of those utensils since my college days.

  2. Great job! It's amazing how the simple things can make you feel so good, isn't it? I love how you were able to identify what you really needed and let the rest go!

I'm hosting a brand new linky party on my blog, Organizing Homelife, and I would love for you to link up this post!

  3. Wow, I probably need to do the same thing..my problem would be that I would get rid of something that I need. Maybe I could just find a container to keep those "only need for a special meal" that way they wouldn't clutter up a drawer.

    Love your blog :)

    1. That is a very good idea. You will be amazed at how much stuff you have that you don't even use. Or, at least, I had a lot of stuff I didn't use. LOL!!! Never knew all of that mess could fit in one drawer either.

Thank you bunches for following my blog! Glad you are enjoying it.

  4. One of the ones you are throwing away is for cleaning your George Foreman grill ...

    1. LOL!!! I found that out once I was going through my pile of giveaways. And, thankfully, I am selling my George Forman grill, so now it has a nice scraper to go with it.

  5. Wonderful purging. I noticed the meat thermometer was on its way out. :) I'm always hesitant to get rid of a few items which are used maybe once or twice a year. After all when I do need it I would want to have it available. Perhaps the secret is to find some place other than my prime drawer space to house those necessary yet infrequently used utensils. :) Another challenge for me. Thank you for the inspiration.

    1. Thank you!!! Here is the funny thing... That wasn't my only meat thermometer. I actually had two. :) The one I use all the time, I kept. The other went to the giveaway pile. I actually had no idea I still had that one. I found that issue with a lot of my utensils. I had duplicates of A LOT. LOL!!!

  6. Kristin, Thanks for linking to Ginny's blog - Organizinghomelife. I found you there. What a great idea! My drawer is always a mess. I can't wait to see how many duplicates I have and make a beautifully organized drawer like you did.
