Displaying Our Diplomas... FINALLY!

My husband and I graduated college 6 and 7 years ago and still do not have our diplomas framed. We have continuously put it off, and honestly, I think we keep forgetting about them. So, when I was designing the layout of our office, I kept those important documents in mind.

I had all intentions of going to one of my favorite stores, Hobby Lobby, and looking for the perfect frame and matte for these documents. But, when I was moving stuff to get ready to paint, I found two identical frames that were hanging in the dining room. All they needed was a little paint...

We will put the wedding photos somewhere else in our home!

So, I got out my acrylic paint and brushes and painted my husband's matte red and mine pink.

The mattes before.

My husband's finished matte.

My finished matte.

Next, I took the glass out of the frames, placed them outside in my painting spot, and painted each frame black. I used Krylon's glossy black from Wal-Mart

It took 3 coats of spray paint to cover up all of the brown and gold in the frames.

I let the frames sit out in the sun for around 6 hours to make sure they were completely dry. I would wait at least 24 hours before hanging the frame if you decide to spray paint a frame of your own. You risk the spray paint leaving marks on the wall or furniture if you choose not to do this.

And, here are the final products... : )

I wish the university would've used smaller font or put the name on two lines.
I hate that I had to cut a little of the name off on the edges.

Happy Creating,

  1. Thanks for letting us know what paint you used. I am about to embark on a similar project and haven't chosen the paint yet, so thanks for the tip! By the way, they turned out great!

  2. Love it that you painted yours pink! And glad to see that painting the matte turned out so well. I have similar plans for artwork in my living room and it's good to see that they didn't warp ..

    1. I am definitely a pink sort of girl! :) I was worried about the matte warping at first, but I thought I didn't have anything to lose in the process. LOL! I am sure yours will turn out just as good. Can't wait to see yours too! ;)

  3. Looks lovely. I have never framed my diploma but I did paint a frame that looked exactly liked those, except larger.

    1. Thank you! A couple of years ago, I loved the color of the frames. But, I have learned that my taste has changed a lot since then. So, they needed a little makeover. ;)

  5. They look so cute and bright! Definitely will stand out! My suggestion for the matte cutting off some of the type - how about X-acto knife (or take a box cutter) and cut off the small inner matte frame on each? I think that would make it just so all of the degree text can be seen. www.justhadabrightidea.blogspot.com

    1. Thank you! And, thank you for the suggestion. I have a little while before they will be hung up, so I may just try that. I can't stand that some of the type is cut off. :)
